Our 40 acre prairie is located just north of Sun Prairie, WI. It is filled with wildflowers, most of them native to the area, also known as forbs. There is something in bloom from spring thru autumn. There are also some native grasses & sedges mixed in.
When we established our prairie in 1999-2000 we restored the cropland back to its natural prairie state. It now provides a beautiful habitat for many birds, insects & other animals.
Our prairie is burned every few years which is an important part of the prairie system. Fire allows for the nutrients in the dead forbs and grasses to be returned to the soil & it helps to prevent certain other plants, trees & shrubs from encroaching. Burning depletes the soil of some of its nitrogen which the native plants don't rely on, but which the non-native plants thrive on. Many species of plants found on a prairie respond well after a fire, producing really good crops of viable seeds.
Even after growing our prairie for 10 years, we are still learning more about it. We are often awed by the beauty that blooms in our field, unseen by most people.
Now that our prairie is well established we are able to harvest seeds from a select number of plants in quantities that we no longer need for re-planting. These seeds are being offered for sale when available at prices lower than can be found at most other places.
